the fires blaze with fury of inferno! Run people!
somehow I let him sit without the flames for so so long. Maybe I was dreading the fire making quite a lot and that made me hesitate. but eventually he was finished so here is his fire-y butt finally :D
Am I doing too much fuzzy things? XD
Sometimes I want to jump ahead and do other parts first but I can't cause I have to follow the pattern of the fur ^^
so I really like stripes it seems. so here's building up the color pattern
I wasn't sure about the brightness of the stripes at first so I started with something duller. however that worked out in the end as it alowed me to gradually build up the pattern so it's not even all over the place
Could be better. but it's good enough :)
I realise that I initally wanted to make hte scales a lot more like cracked suurface of lava. Seems I still need more practice with that :)
Pure black was just not working h+for him. No no no, needs to get some color on there now!
plenty of red for the underwing I decided. as for the stripes I just decided to wing it and see where it goes how it goes. I had a general idea of what I want and was half tempted to make them gold, but eventually setteled on just regular acrylic color.
Black paint with minimal reflection looks like a hole in the imahe XD also painted trebuchet
I'm super happy how the dark paint make the entire thing look old and worn. maybe even charred from attacking dragons.
Quite the shiny armor you've got there, also tiny bow and and tiny arrows for a tiny dragon rider
he's well equiped. a perfect long range weapon for a flying dragon type :D
War torn Battle scar. The boy has seen many battles go down and yet he still lives!
Not intentinally I have discovered how I could make pretty nice looking scars. Just make the sculpt out of bright fleshy clay and then one very thin laer of the desired color of skin. Steap 2? Take a knife and stab the shit out him! XD

I don't care if it's calles trebuchet. I'll forever call it a catapult XD
since I myself am not much of a history fan I have left the job of creating a medieval war machine to my brother. It came out looking really great in the end even if it was just the first try and going on nothing but a few internet images. It's even functional!
painted details almost there
I almost overdid the painting here. at one point I did think I went overboard but when put on the gradd platform it looked fine :)
Little medieval flag will proudly stan on the war torn fields hanging from a trebuchet
I'm really happy how clean the edges on the painted surface came out on this one. the masking tape worked beautifually here and the gold adds just the right accents at the edges. I'm also quite satisfied with the look of the batkitty emblem.

I do like the unicorn but I really screwed with the coloring. all spotty and dirty looking. And not in natural dirty looking way. Just sloppily made looking XD
So then I just went with the "bat kitty" idea for the design and do an entirely different flag.

Time to suit up for war little dragon rider :<
Despite being small I tried to include as many details as I could in the armor and gear
somehow even with a sketch I went too much traditional with the scales XD well someday I'll get it right
yext time I might atempt to do the scales by carving them out to have better visual control
The little dragon rider for the mighty dragon warrior
It's been many many years since I made a rider for my dragons. So this was a nice change of pace adding the tiny figure :D

Also the dragon is painted with low reflective black. I used "blackest black" from #culturehustle I bought. It's not so much that it is that dark, it really isn't, but it does give the effect of being darker because it does not reflect light the way typical acrylic does. and I love the effect. Unfortunately here it was not the right subject to use it on. it took away far too much about the dragon's details of the scales and skin. Something this figure really needed to be interesting so he's up for a repaint. unfortunate but I'll find better uses. Perhaps caves and holes where you really want to avoid any kind of reflecting surface :)

And I again forgot to take progress pictures until the dragon was alredy quite defined. Oh well :O

This one is rather bulky creature and ended up adding plenty of thick layers to build up the wanted shape. sometimes I wonder why I do the muscles cause in cases like these, nothing will be seen under the crusty scales TuT
Concept sketch for the next companion project. A warrior of sorts
Making dinamic poses is always a treat to do and this one certainly is one of the more "off center" ones. I think making sketches really helps to keep to the original idea. Otherwise I tend to sray pretty far off if I just go from memory. Might start doing this for all my projects.
And of course after a long time I once more am making a sort of "dragon rider" sculpture.
He is planned to be a "twin" sculpture to a "queen" version of a wyvern.
What is also planned is a more complex base consisting of medieval age battle equipment such as trebuchet.

I have done a fire dragon before and I enjoyed it, but I wanted to try something a little more dinamic as far as the coloration goes and the way the flame is used. I want to make it look like he's coming out of the fire and cooling off further from the flame core he gets, so certain parts will be more black and lower parts very brightly colored

Of course I forgot to take any pictures for the progress updates sooner. Ah well. For the past few years I've been doing a a series of similar foxes on a stone cube. This time I wanted to mix it up a bit and make a sort of environmental base. Just a hint of nature, for the fox to walk across platforms in stead of a single mass.
The fox will be covered in fluf like I usually do them and after do the paint accents where needed to bring out the shape a bit.

so on a first try I used a styrofoam egg shape but the clay shrank too much when drying and smushed it. the egg shape is not there anymore

It's ironic when a mistake when making the clay bach gives you cracking effect. Completely unusuble until discovering it's perfect to make stones and then never be able to repeat the mistake when you actually need it to have the perfect stome making clay :I
But after 2 failed attempts I went with a cracking paste but still didn't achieve the desired effect so I went back in with more clay and just sculpt a few more detains in addition to the cracked surface.

Changing eye color after changing sculpture direction
One of the necessary changes was the eyes. I liked the original ones but were far away from the new vision. So I needed to make new ones are popo out the old ones- poor guy went blind for a bit there :O

Now he really looks like he bathed in a pool of blood of sacrificed victims :O this is to get the red paint in deep crevices of the skin where it will shine through darker pait later on :)

So sometimes it's necessary to destroy something even if you've alredy did corrections on it before. The end result will be better if you chose to do so instead of keeping it as is just to save time :O

Sometimes it's interesting to see them change as paint is applied. Before this project was cahnged from original to Got was tempted tokeep him white. I wish I could keep him white :P One day I shall make that white dragon. One day! XD
Yes. One day! XD But I'm really happy how the red smothly transotions and no brush stroke is visible :)
